We're home to research expertise on climate change across time and space. We recognise that climate change is a multi-faceted problem that requires integration of physical and social science.
As a cross-disciplinary hub, we have a particular interest in the relationship between science, policy and culture, particularly in the developing world.
Projects

Design principles and responsible innovation for a sustainable digital economy (PARIS-DE)
This project is investigating and co-designing a framework for sustainable and responsible innovation in Digital Technology. It brings together researchers from Lancaster University, University of Oxford, University of Sussex, Mike Berners-Lee’s Small World Consulting, and Dr Gabrielle Samuel from King’s College London.
Deplete and retreat: the future of the Andean Water Towers
This large (£2.5 million) NERC Highlights Project brings together experts in glaciology, climate and hydrology and aims to assess the sensitivity of water resources across the Andes to the changing supplies of snow and ice. The team includes Drs Tom Matthews & Tamsin Edwards.

Weathering identity: weather and memory in England
This King’s project looks at the relationship between weather, memory and sense of place and identity in the east of England. The team is particularly interested in memories from older people who live outside of the big metropolitan centres, and are currently conducting a pilot project of oral histories.

Carrots and Sticks
Carrots & Sticks is the world’s most comprehensive, and freely available, database of mandatory and voluntary policies that shape the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) impact of businesses worldwide. It provides access to and in-depth analysis of policies from over 130 countries, nearly 80 international and regional organizations, and in 38 languages. It is supported by Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

The Deep End of the Ocean: Nauru, Seabed Mining and the Paradox of the Green Economy
This project examines the prospect of deep-sea mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Pacific, spanning from Hawai'i to Mexico.

PROTECT: Projecting Sea-level rise: from Ice sheets to local implications
Sea level rise (SLR) due to climate change is a serious global threat that can result in land ice loss and ocean thermal expansion. This EU-funded project will significantly improve our understanding and model representation of ice sheet processes and offer a new approach in modelling the interactions between atmosphere, ocean and ice sheets – toward long-standing scientific and social contributions.

Pathways to equitable healthy cities
This is a global partnership that aims to improve population health, enhance health equity, and ensure environmental sustainability in cities around the world through co-production of evidence with policy and civil society partners in five countries. Professor Frans Berkhout and Dr Maheshika Sakalasuriya are representing King’s on the project, leading the co-production working group.

PERITIA - Policy, Expertise and Trust
PERITIA is an EU-funded project investigating public trust in expertise. The Policy Institute is part of a multi-disciplinary team seeking to help citizens and policymakers understand trust in science and identify trustworthy expertise. The project aims to enhance trust in a better democratic governance for the future of Europe.
Dispersal of hominins across Asia – species interactions and climate
Examining whether, where, and when climate change may have allowed hominins to spread from Africa and across Asia between 180-50 thousand years ago

Elemental Adaptation: Water and energy security from artificial ice reservoirs
This project explores the potential of Artificial Ice Reservoirs (AIRs) as alternative water sources, and the implications in mountainous regions.

Hopeful Futures
Developing and testing tools to support more constructive and future-focused conversations on climate change in deliberative settings.

Just Transitions and power shifts: capital, labour and energy in the North Sea region
Exploring what a rapid shift in energy politics in the North Sea could mean as the UK and Norway shift away from oil and gas and towards green sources of energy
Testing the role of nutrient input thresholds in governing microbial-mediated carbon sequestration for temperate peatlands
Examining palaeoclimate data & genomic sequencing of microbial communities to understand how peatlands have responded to changes in nutrients over 2000 years.
