Course overview

This course is available at both Level 6 and Level 7. Please ensure you apply for the appropriate Level (you need to provide evidence of a BSc Hons degree to study at Level 7)

Applications for:

  • Term 4 (work based learning modules only) will open end of April and close on 15 June.
  • Term 3 (work based learning modules only) will open end of January and close on 15 March.
  • Term 2 (work based learning modules only) will open end of September and close on 15 Nov.
  • Term 1 (work based learning modules only) will open end of June and close on 15 Sept.

This module offers an opportunity to acquire academic credit for learning gained from specific educational activities undertaken in your workplace. For most students, this will be linked to a course or study days provided by your employers but for others, it may be an individual project or practice development negotiated with managers and colleagues.

WBL recognises students as independent learners able to learn from their experiences at work. The ethos of WBL is based on the definition by Chalmers et al (2001, p.599): 'Learning for work, at work and through work, where successful assessment leads to academic credit rating, but not in itself, a named academic award. The assessment is of the current learning and is therefore not retrospective'.

The module enables you to develop as a life long learner by critically reflecting on and improving your learning skills and abilities. You will produce a portfolio of learning activities demonstrating your learning from the work-based activity and your own development as a learner. The portfolio can contribute to evidence of professional development.

What does this course cover?

The work-based learning module is designed to offer a practice-related approach to learning. It provides an opportunity for students to gain academic credit for learning undertaken through structured educational activities in their workplace. The assessment allows students to critically reflect on themselves as lifelong learners and to focus on one or two aspects of their learning to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding, and to critically evaluate the impact on their practice.

It provides the opportunity for personal and professional development as part of masters or undergraduate degree programmes or as continuing professional development. Students receive academic support from designated Faculty staff.

Inquiries are welcomed by healthcare provider organisations. Individual students can also use this module to demonstrate learning gained from a work-based practice development project or other substantive activity. They would need the support of their employers.

What will I achieve?

By undertaking, this module students will have the opportunity to:

• Further, develop their critical thinking and writing skills.
• Demonstrate knowledge, critical understanding and application to their practice of learning gained from a work-based learning opportunity.
• Reflect on their effectiveness as an independent learner.
• Develop strategies to improve their ability to learn effectively from work-based learning opportunities.
