February marks LGBTQ+ History Month, a time to reflect on the critical role that individuals from this community have played in shaping history – and to consider the efforts still needed for full equality.
This year’s theme – ‘Activism and Social Change’ – highlights how collective action drives progress and transforms lives across LGBTQ+ communities.
Why this month matters
Running from 1 – 28 February, LGBTQ+ History Month was established by the charity ‘Schools Out UK’ in 2005 to coincide with the abolition of Section 28, a law that once prohibited schools in the UK from educating students about anything related to LGBTQ+ issues. While Pride Month in June often features larger celebrations, February honours the voices that fought for today’s freedoms, whilst pointing out persistent challenges the community faces

LGBTQ+ Blind Date with a Book
Monday 3 February 2025, 12.00–13.00, The Studio, Bush House Southeast Wing
Ready for something new to read? Pick up a mystery-wrapped book – each one curated from independent bookshops and tied to LGBTQ+ themes. It’s first come, first served, and you can follow the prompts on the wrapping to guess your perfect match. Expect a welcoming space to chat with other readers, celebrate LGBTQ+ authors and maybe discover your new favourite story. Oh, and you get to take the book home too! I’m excited for the surprises and to see which book my blind date will be. You can find out more details on the KCLSU website.
Queer Film Night: ‘BPM’
Hosted by the KCL LGBTQ+ Society, this screening of the acclaimed film about the AIDS crisis in the 1990s promises an immersive look at community, protest, and resilience. I’m intrigued by how past activism has shaped the world today, particularly in educating people to combat stigma around HIV and AIDS. Stay tuned on the society's Instagram for more details.
Bad Sex – Sexuality, Gender and Affect in Contemporary TV
Tuesday 18 February 2025, 17.00–19.00, Bush House South Wing 2.03
Hosted by Queer@King’s, this event introduces a thought-provoking study of shifting sexual representation on TV, spotlighting how women, trans, non-binary and ethnically underrepresented creatives have fuelled social change on screen. Expect a presentation, panel discussion and a free wine reception at the end. I’m excited to learn how these collective voices have fundamentally shaped LGBTQ+ representation. You can register now.
Out at Sea at the National Maritime Museum
15 – 23 February 2025, National Maritime Museum
Take a break from coursework and explore Out at Sea, a free-entry festival at the National Maritime Museum that celebrates the LGBTQ+ seafaring histories. Collaborate on colourful mini art pieces and get lost within the storytelling exhibitions. I’m drawn to the idea of hands-on art sessions and listening to maritime stories I’ve never heard before.
