The top 5 things we learned as Student Life Content Creators

09 September 2025

Hey, I’m Michelle, and I’m currently finishing my journey at King’s. I’m a Master’s student in the Department of Social Sciences and Public Health, studying Global Health, Social Justice and Public Policy.

I’m Neha, a penultimate-year Philosophy & Modern Languages student.

From November 2024 to April 2025, we were the first-ever Content Leads on the Student Life Content Creators (SLCC) programme. In this role, we wrote articles, created videos, and conducted interviews that highlighted important aspects of the student experience at King’s. With the support of the Student Content Management team – who manage platforms like Student News, the Student App, and Student Services Online – we got to explore the ins and outs of professional content creation.

Michelle: My favourite part of the SLCC programme has been learning how King’s campaigns and communications really work behind the scenes. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the effort and care that goes into every piece of content the university shares.

Neha: Finding meaningful work experience at uni can feel like trying to snag a Northern Line seat on a Saturday night — exhausting, competitive, and nearly impossible to get the right fit. That’s why I was so excited to find that the SLCC programme offered 1-to-1 support, real flexibility, and creative freedom from the very beginning.

Keep reading to find out the top 5 things that made the programme so special to us, what we’ve learned from it and why you should apply for the opportunity this year if you did not do so last year.

1. Personal and professional growth

Michelle: One of my biggest takeaways from the SLCC programme was the copywriting training. It gave me practical skills that I could immediately apply when writing engaging and meaningful articles.

Neha: We also learned about King’s editorial house style, which provided insight into the world of branding and marketing. Besides that, this programme gave me an opportunity to adapt my writing style to different audiences and break out of rigid academic writing. I’ve definitely become a more versatile communicator especially in my written communication skills.

“I loved the training opportunities, meeting new people from different faculties and learning off people with different experiences.”– Michelle

2. No prior experience needed

Michelle: I learned so much about working in diverse teams with people from different backgrounds. We were able to combine each other’s strengths and support one another whenever someone was struggling.

Neha: I enjoyed working closely with my line managers to refine articles before they got posted. I was able to consistently improve the flow of my writing by implementing their edits and suggestions. Thanks to their help, I didn’t need any prior copywriting expertise to guide me as I gained it along the way.

3. Community connection

Michelle: I discovered how to connect with people within just a few minutes. Conducting interviews and stopping students for quick questions turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences, it helped me feel more connected to the King’s community and gave me the chance to hear a variety of student stories whilst also learning from their experiences and journeys.

Neha: Since the programme largely consists of remote work, collaborating on joint briefs with other content leads has been a great way to build community while improving my teamwork skills.

“Being a content creator allowed me to spread my wings as a writer. I learned so much about the student experience and found myself constantly seeking inspiration, and that’s truly one of the most beautiful parts of what we do as content creators.”– Neha

4. Your voice matters

Michelle: One of my favourite parts of the programme was being able to pitch my own ideas. Having the chance to feel heard and watch a brief come to life, from an initial idea to a fully published piece, was incredibly motivating.

Neha: While seeing my content live on the King’s website and student newsletters has been so gratifying, it was also a bit scary at times. However, I learned not to fear this level of visibility, but rather embrace it. I used it as a motivator to write authentically and let my natural voice shine.

5. A launchpad for future opportunities

Michelle: The programme has been a great stepping stone, not only for developing creative skills but also for opening up new opportunities, both personally and professionally.

Neha: I cherished getting to create both written and video content in a team and individually. This gave me a wide breadth of transferable skills: the ability to effectively communicate a key message, think creatively and adapt to feedback and time constraints.

Our final piece of advice

Michelle: The best advice I could give to any King’s student interested in joining the programme is to make the most of every opportunity it gives you. You’ll be supported by a brilliant team that’s always ready to guide you, but it’s also the perfect chance to bring your own ideas to life and challenge yourself creatively.

Neha: There’s no ‘right’ way to create content in this programme. If you have an idea, pitch it, plan it, and get to work — the space to experiment is what makes this experience so rewarding.

For us, being Student Life Content Creators wasn’t just about writing articles, it was about building confidence, learning real-world skills that we’ll use beyond university, and connecting with people who share our passions.
