Subject areas:

Physical and Biological Sciences

Funding type:

Bursary. Tuition fee. Bench Fees / Research Training & Support Grant.

These doctoral studentships are for physical and biological scientists - biochemists, biophysicists, cell biologists, experimental physicists, and related disciplines.

Award details

The Centre for the Physical Science of Life's vision is to transform our understanding of life through the innovative power of physical science.

We foster a hub for creativity, pioneer new frontiers at discipline interfaces and provide innovative, impactful solutions for pressing societal challenges.

The physical sciences of physics, maths and chemistry can help solve fundamental challenges at the heart of modern biology and unlock fundamental secrets about the make up of living beings.

The goal of our unique centre is to achieve a whole-scale quantitative understanding of life using physical and mathematical principles. By coalescing expertise across the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Science, our ambition is to integrate experimental and computational physical science approaches to develop a unified framework for understanding biology that integrates molecular and systems levels of thinking into a coherent holistic view.

This presents a significant new frontier for physical science as we expand the horizons of physical science to unresolved biological questions.

Award value

All studentships are funded awards for 3.5 years and include tuition fees, stipend, and a research and training support grant (RTSG).

  • Tuition fees: All tuition fees will be fully covered.
  • Stipend: Students will receive a tax-free stipend for each year of study at UKRI rates. For 2024/25, the stipend will be £21,237 per annum.
  • RTSG: An allowance of £4,500 p.a. will be provided for research-related costs, including consumables, attendance at UK and international conferences, and training.

Please note: the studentships have a start date of 1st October 2024.

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility: Both UK and overseas students are eligible to apply.

The Centre for the Physical Science of Life Doctoral Studentships are aimed at students who have, or expect to have, an integrated Master’s (e.g., MSci) with first-class honours or upper division second-class honours (2:1), or a BSc plus Master’s (MSc) degree with Merit or Distinction in Physics, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or related subject. The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong interest and motivation for combining experiments with computational modelling. Previous research experience in an interdisciplinary research environment is desirable.
