The faculty invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship to start 1st October 2024. It can be for any of our PhD programmes: Nursing Research; Midwifery Research; Palliative Care Research; Health Studies Research. 

 

Award value

Stipend: UK Research Council rate (minimum £19,237 plus London weighting). 

Bench Fees: £0 (Though there is a conference/training PGR budget held by the faculty which we encourage our students to apply for).

Tuition fees: Full tuition fees.

Eligibility criteria

This award is open to UK and overseas applicants.

  • Applicants should hold an upper second-class undergraduate degree and a masters degree obtained from a UK university or an overseas qualification of equivalent standard. In exceptional cases other qualifications and experience may be considered and all applications will be assessed on their merit.
  • To study at King's, if English is not your first language, it is essential that you can communicate in English effectively in an academic environment. You are usually required to provide certification of your competence in English before starting your studies.   • Students currently enrolled in one of our PhD programmes within the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care are not eligible to apply.

Application process

To be considered for the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care funded studentship, candidates must first apply via the King’s Apply online application system.

Prior to making a formal application, we encourage applicants to start by identifying potential supervisors and emailing our Senior Programmes Officer (PGR) at nmpc_pgr_enquiries@kcl.ac.uk the following information:

  • Names of 2-3 staff members they would be interested in having allocated as a supervisor.
  • A copy of their Curriculum Vitae.
  • A copy of their Research Proposal.

We ask that your PhD research proposal is set out as follows:

  • Abstract: Write a short description or abstract (maximum of 4000 characters) of your proposed work.  
  • Aim and objectives of the research (up to 150 words): State in non-technical language a clear research question that the research will address. This should include primary hypotheses, if appropriate. 
  • Essential background information (up to 500 words): Briefly state what research has already been undertaken regarding your research topic.  How does you research question fill a gap in existing knowledge/evidence.   
  • Proposed plan of work (up to 1000 words): Include key aspects of the study design (e.g.: ethnography, participatory action research, mixed methods research, developing a survey instrument) and if relevant statistical methods you will use. Make it clear how the design and methods will address the aims of the study. A timeline or Gantt chart is very helpful here.

Following this, our Senior Programmes Officer (PGR) will facilitate communication with the potential PhD supervisors that you’ve identified to determine their availability for supervising your project. In cases where the specified staff members are unable to supervise, the Senior Programmes Officer will coordinate with other suitable faculty members to identify alternative potential PhD supervisors.

If/when the potential supervisor suggests proceeding with a formal application, please first complete your formal application via King’s Apply, then, if you wish to be considered for the NMPC studentship, please complete this MS Form. Please note that this is an essential step and we cannot consider your application for the NMPC scholarship funding unless we receive a completed MS Form

 
 

Selection process

All eligible applicants for the NMPC scholarship funding will be shortlisted based an assessment of their research proposals and personal statements and, if selected, will be interviewed by their potential PhD supervisors and a member of the PGR team.

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria during selection:

  • Originality and Scientific Merit of the Project 
  • Methodology/ Achievability    
  • Relevance to Faculty Research 
  • Strength/Academic Merit of the applicant    
  • Strength of Personal Statement     
  • Strength of Support from Referees
