Highlights

  • King’s intercalated programmes offer a wide range of options including medical specialisms and broad themes
  • You will explore current trends and cutting-edge research working alongside international experts at a leading research institution.
  • Graduates have been published as a result of their BSc project, and some have gone on to present their research at conferences.

An intercalated BSc (iBSc) degree gives you the opportunity to explore an aspect of medical or dental studies in much greater detail and to gain an iBSc qualification in just one year. Typically, intercalated subjects require you to examine current research and to conduct an experimental project of your own, deepening your knowledge and adding to your portfolio of skills.

Intercalated BSc programmes at King's

As a student on an undergraduate Medical, Dental or Veterinary programme, either at King’s or another institution, you have the opportunity to intercalate – to leverage the foundation stages of your current degree with an additional year of intensive study to achieve an iBSc – before continuing with your programme. An intercalated degree is an excellent means of both confirming and demonstrating your interest in areas of speciality that you may choose to target later in your career.

Intercalated BSc programmes at King’s are well-established and offer a broad range of subjects that will extend your understanding and provide depth and context to a particular aspect of your broader medical qualification. You may for example choose a specifically clinical topic such as Pharmacology, Endocrinology or Neuroscience or choose to tackle subjects that explore a particular health-related issue such as Immunobiology and Global and Women’s Health. Whatever you choose to study, you will benefit from world-class teaching and learn new ways of studying that will contribute both to your knowledge and your professional development, particularly if you aim to be involved in research in your clinical career.

Careers – where could your programme take you?

Intercalating is a great way to explore specialisms within the medical field or to set clinical learning within a broader thematic examination of issues. Either way, students with an iBSc are recognised as individuals who have pushed themselves and gained additional knowledge and skills in a highly competitive and pressured field. In many cases an iBSc will form the basis for career-defining decisions including the choice of medical specialism or research, or a decision to work with a charity or NGO.
