The Dickson Poon School of Law – nurturing the best legal minds

31 May 2016

Thanks to our incredible alumni, and the wider King’s community supporting the World questions | King’s answers campaign, The Dickson Poon School of Law has undergone a remarkable transformation. Established in 1831, the School is one of the oldest and most respected in England and can now boldly claim to be the best in Britain.

The metamorphosis includes a new name – The Dickson Poon School of Law – and a prestigious new home within Somerset House East Wing. This iconic and historic building is ideally situated at the centre of the British legal world, with Parliament, government departments, the Royal Courts of Justice and major global law firms all within walking distance. King’s students will literally have the legal world on their doorstep.

A global powerhouse
Launched in 2014, The Dickson Poon Transnational Law Institute has become a global hub of teaching and academic research. It brings academics together to work on solutions to some of the most pressing legal challenges. The Institute has already established three forward- thinking new postgraduate programmes in International Dispute Resolution, Transnational Law and Global Justice.

Nurturing talent
Thanks to generous supporters of Kings, the School is able to run an extensive scholarship programme that rewards academic excellence, relieves hardship and enhances the student experience. Our commitment to supporting the most talented students, irrespective of their background, means that the programme is undoubtedly highly competitive. The School’s scholarship Programme is however the largest of its kind in Europe.

The world’s best legal minds
The Dickson Poon School of Law boasts one of the world’s most distinguished academic research and teaching reputations. Its global reputation as a centre for academic excellence attracts top legal minds from institutions around the world. The faculty advise governments, serve on commissions and public bodies and are seconded to major organisations. Their expertise extends across all levels of policy-making bodies in the UK, Europe and around the world. For example, through its innovative Thought Salon series, The Dickson Poon School of Law addresses some of the most complex challenges facing legal professionals and global society today. These high-level seminars bring together leaders from business, government, the legal world, academia and the third sector for frank and engaging dialogue.

King’s is immensely proud that The Dickson Poon School of Law was ranked top in the UK for world-leading research in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) in December 2014. Through this incredible centre of excellence, we do believe we are helping to address some of the world’s most challenging legal and policy questions.
