Biography
Dr Huw C Bennett is a lecturer in Defence Studies based at the Joint Services Command and Staff College. He holds BScEcon (Hons) and MScEcon (Distinction) degrees in Strategic Studies from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. His PhD thesis, also completed at Aberystwyth, examined the use of force by the British Army in countering the Mau Mau insurgency in Kenya. Whilst at Aberystwyth, he taught undergraduate courses in International Relations, strategy and military history. Before coming to the JSCSC he was also a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies, University of Calgary, Canada. He is currently working on three projects: counter-insurgency strategy in Northern Ireland, 1972-1976, the British Army in the Mau Mau Emergency in Kenya, 1952-56, and the contemporary history of intelligence and security. Dr Bennett is a member of the Society for Army Historical Research, the British International Studies Association, the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies, and the International Institute of Strategic Studies. His research has been generously funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, King’s College London, and the Scouloudi Foundation.
