Biomedical Engineering

Using innovation to tackle the biggest healthcare challenges of our time.

Our Department’s excellence in multidisciplinary research and teaching develops innovative biomedical engineering technologies that address the largest healthcare challenges in the world.

We train and prepare the next generation of world leaders in biomedical engineering to help treat cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

Why Study at the Department of Biomedical Engineering

  • Based in St Thomas Hospital, students learn from both academics and clinicians
  • Access to state-of-the-art facilities, such as 8 clinical scanners, including the ultra-high field 7T scanner, the first of its kind in London, allowing for faster translation of research into the clinic
  • Close collaboration with clinicians, industry and public-sector organizations

Research Specialisms

Our Department specializes in core areas in which biomedical engineering breakthroughs are dependent on technological innovation for better diagnosis, stratification and treatment. Our specialisms are:

We train the next generation of world-class biomedical engineers, and prioritize collaboration between our researchers and industry. Because of this, we’re breaking down barriers between disciplines to deliver faster translation of research into the clinic to improve the quality of life for patients around the world.
