King's x Somerset House Studios

King’s x Somerset House Studios is a research & development scheme which facilitates and supports new collaborations between King’s researchers from across the Arts & Sciences faculties and the Studios’ hub of resident artists, designers and thinkers.

Aimed at addressing pressing contemporary issues and enhancing public knowledge and understanding through interdisciplinary collaboration, the programme offers up to £5,000 of seed-funding to potential artist-researcher teams to connect, develop and test ideas, and explore critical new perspectives on contemporary culture and society.

Each year, up to six collaborative projects are selected for funding after a series of networking and curated presentation events hosted by King’s and Somerset House Studios. The funded collaborations culminate in an exciting and innovative showcase to arts industry representatives and academics.

The new 2021-2022 iteration of the programme, entitled A New Chapter, is supporting six artist-researcher teams across an unprecedented range of research and artistic practice to consider themes such as growth and the post pandemic world; activism and community; economy and currency; global/local economies; climate change; identity; health and wellbeing; migration, immigration and borders; cities, urbanism, space; healing, joy and pleasure.

Past projects

After supporting 11 successful collaborations in 2017 and 2018, which brought new perspectives on issues such as migration, gender, sexual consent and the politics of black queer sound, many of the selected researchers and academics for King’s x Somerset House Studios have presented their work and research developed within the programme on national and international platforms and formed long lasting collaborative partnership
