Louis Phelps

louisphelps150I joined the MA programme at King’s in 2016 after completing my undergraduate studies in History and Politics at the University of Manchester. The breadth of modules offered meant the course was engaging and challenging from beginning to end and resulted in a rewarding academic experience.

Taking an MA allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the topics I most enjoyed studying at undergraduate level whilst working alongside knowledgeable and enthusiastic tutors at an institution with a global reputation.

King’s also offers a wide range of opportunities outside of academic study. Whilst at King’s I took part in a competition run by King’s Policy Institute where students have three minutes to pitch a policy suggestion to a panel of judges and a live audience. Postgraduate students are also entitled to a free credited language module to undertake alongside their studies; I chose to learn Spanish. These are just two of the opportunities offered to students that make King’s stand out from other universities and offer a more complete postgraduate experience.

I finished my studies in September 2017 and am now working for the Civil Service in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), having joined the fast stream programme. The careers service proved invaluable during the application process offering advice and guidance at every stage. Most important however were the skills and experiences I gained during my time here, which I was able to draw upon throughout my application and I now use in my day-to-day work. I have no doubt that choosing to study an MA at King’s was instrumental in helping me secure my ideal first job.
