Why Saving Energy Matters at King’s
Saving energy not only benefits the planet but also helps our community by reducing costs, freeing up funds to enhance facilities, research and student services. It’s about more than savings - it reflects our values of sustainability and leadership. By making conscious choices, we set an example for students and beyond. Together, we can create a greener, more responsible King’s. Let’s act today for a better tomorrow. Every action counts.
Energy-saving tips for a greener workplace
Staff play a crucial role in making King’s a more sustainable university. Here’s how you can help:
Turn off devices
Shut down computers, printers, and other devices when they are not in use, especially at the end of the day. Even in standby mode, many devices continue to use power, so make sure they are fully switched off whenever possible.
Use sleep mode
Set up your devices to go into sleep mode after a short period of inactivity to cut unnecessary power use. This simple action can significantly reduce energy waste while maintaining productivity.
Smart power strips
Use these to completely cut power to devices that still use energy even when turned off, such as monitors and printers. These power strips detect when a primary device (like a computer) is turned off and automatically cut power to connected peripherals, preventing phantom energy loss.
Use energy-efficient lighting
Swap out traditional bulbs for LED alternatives, which consume less energy and last longer. Where possible, take advantage of natural daylight instead of artificial lighting.
Optimise heating and cooling
Adjust thermostats to a comfortable yet energy-efficient temperature. Dress appropriately for the season to reduce the need for excessive heating or cooling.
Encourage energy-conscious behaviours
Lead by example and remind your colleagues to be mindful of their energy use. Whether it’s turning off unused meeting room lights or unplugging chargers when not in use, every effort counts.
Treat King’s like your home away from home
We all share the responsibility of keeping our campus energy efficient. If you spot unnecessary lighting, dripping taps, or any other energy wastage, report it to the campus facilities team.
Small actions lead to big changes, and together, we can make King’s a leader in sustainability.
Let’s power down, switch off, and work together for a greener future! Together we can make a difference.
