Colleagues, postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate research students in the Department of English produce world-leading and impactful research on literary culture and creative practice from the medieval to the contemporary.

Our department celebrates the historical and geographical scope of our research and our engagement with the cultural organisations around us.

Research at the Department has been recognised in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, with 90 per cent overall rating for either ‘world leading’ (4*) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3*) research and 100 per cent at 4* and 3* for research environment.

The English department is home to award-winning novelists, poets, essayists, biographers, non-fiction authors, and literary critics, who teach undergraduate modules in a range of disciplines. They also supervise creative projects at doctoral level within their specialisms.
