Research

The Department of French has 13 full-time permanent academic staff and 6 postdoctoral research staff actively engaged in research across the full chronological and disciplinary range of French Studies.  

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework Modern Languages at King’s was ranked 9th in the UK in terms of ‘power ranking’. The Department of French submitted to the REF along with staff from the Departments of German and of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies.  

Postgraduate research students in the Department may benefit from generous financial support from the Thérèse Zadora Fund for conference attendance and organisation and from the Crompton studentship, which funds up to a year’s study in France or a French-speaking country at UKRC rates. We have a strong record of success in terms of PhD studentships funded by the London Arts and Humanities Partnership, and an equally strong record in terms of the number of former PhD students currently in permanent academic posts.   

The Department supports a vibrant research culture via fortnightly research seminars, featuring prominent external speakers, and strong interdisciplinary ties across the Faculty and beyond.

Staff in the Department of French are involved in the Early Modern Forum inter-departmental seminar series, the Postcolonial Studies Network, the Centre for Late Antique and Medieval Studies, the Centre for Enlightenment Studies, and the Centre for Modern Literature & Culture.
