Research

A newly founded Department at a prestigious and established institution, GHSM ranked within the top 10 of sociology departments in the UK in only its 2nd year of existence. 100 per cent of the impact of its research is judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent.

Developments in biomedicine raise profound ethical, legal and economic challenges for society. King’s College London has historically been at the forefront of medical research and teaching - our departmental research culture builds on King’s excellence to extend health research in a social context. Research in the Department is characterized by our '3 Cs': Commitment, Complexity and Courage

Courage

Commitment

Complexity

Commitment

Complexity

Courage

Commitment

We value rigorous, responsible research that contributes to significant social, moral, ethical and policy challenges around development in health, medicine and biotechnology

Complexity

We understand that responding to these challenges will rarely involve simple, reductive or straightforward answers; and so we embrace interdisciplinary perspective and learning, as well as collaborative research

Courage

We understand that is is difficult to do this. It is difficult to extend ourselves intellectually and methodologically; to enter a research space frequently characterised by uncertainty.

The Department of Global Health & Social Medicine (formerly known as Social Science, Health & Medicine) will provide the support and the resources that enable people to carry out this groundbreaking research.

Research resources

All faculty and researchers have access to King’s’ excellent library (2 million books, 55,000 scholarly journals, over 329,000 ebooks, over 600 databases and online resources, an open access institutional repository which showcases research outputs of King’s researchers): this includes unrivalled access to health and medical resources that are crucial to our research.

A dedicated information services representative works with the Department to build our specialist resources, and to advise, collectively and on-to-one, on specialist training in information access for our researchers.

In addition researchers have access to the libraries of the University of London, free inter-library loans, and Wellcome Trust and other specialist libraries.

Research Organisation

Research in the Department is organised into a number of research groups of faculty, research fellows, research students and visitors.

Each research group has a set of strategic aims and a forward-looking plan of activities and outputs, including grant development, publications, peer review, public engagement and policy-related work. As part of their contribution to the GHSM research community, research groups also organise seminars, conferences, exhibits, workshops and other communal activities.

Collaborative work across GHSM research groups and with groups across King's is encouraged and supported.
