Common Year One

Our suite of biomedical science courses all have the same curriculum in the first year, giving you the flexibility to change course in year two

'Common Year One' is the name given to our first year curriculum of our biomedical science courses. The hallmark of our Common Year One programmes is flexibility: all students complete the same Common Year One curriculum, covering the core biomedical science disciplines - see the list on the right of this page. After this, you can make an informed decision on which degree you wish to pursue and modules become increasingly specialised according to your choice.

Our Common Year One programmes explore the systems and mechanisms in human development, health, disease and therapeutics, which underpin modern medicine. Working alongside our NHS and industrial partners, we ensure our curriculum is informed by current research and practice. King’s is at the forefront of current advances in basic and applied bioscience, building on a rich legacy of discovery and innovation.

How you will learn

Teaching will comprise both large and small group teaching. Your timetable will be split between lectures, laboratory-based classes, seminars and other types of teaching. Examples of this would be workshops, in-course tests and personal tutorials.

Assessment is by written examination and coursework, including essays, laboratory reports and poster presentations.

You will also be assigned Personal Tutor who can advise on academic or personal problems you may be experiencing.

Changing your programme

During your first year, as you are introduced to new fields of study, your academic interests and career aims may change or develop. Like many of our students, you may decide at the end of your first year that you would rather follow a different degree programme to that in which you first registered.

You are easily able to do this: having successfully completed year one, students can change to any other programme that follows the Common Year One curriculum. Your Personal Tutor or Course Advisor will guide you on your options and most appropriate pathways.

BSc students can also apply to transfer to one of our 4-year MSci programmes: Biochemistry MSci and Molecular Genetics MSci.

Our student community

We have a vibrant student community, and the Bioscience Students' Association (BSA) is specifically for students studying within the School. Throughout the year the BSA organise a range of activities including academic seminars, career events and social gatherings.
