Education & Training

The Department of Population Health Sciences provides a range of non-clinical and clinical undergraduate and post-graduate training opportunities, including PhD, MD and taught Masters level programmes.

We deliver general practice training to every medical student at the GKT School of Medical Education. Our undergraduate programme extends throughout the curriculum and gives students the opportunity to learn core knowledge and skills, develop professionally and have practical experience of patients in clinical environments.

Students and community-based teachers in over 350 practices are supported through lectures, symposia, clinical placements, tutorials, seminars and role-playing workshops.

Our postgraduate academic education is based around the taught Master of Public Health (MPH)  programme, which also offers a Primary Care specialty stream. The MPH is aimed at graduates or holders of a relevant professional qualification, who are working or intend to work in public health. It provides an opportunity to gain the academic background for leadership roles. The MPH (Primary Care) specialty stream is designed to integrate the wide range of professions that contribute to primary healthcare.

The Department also offers supervision for higher research degrees, both PhD and MD.

We seek to recruit entrants to specialist training in general practice through academic clinical fellowship in which they are attached to the department. We also seek to recruit established GP registrars to a specialist ST4 year, when funded by health Education England - South or North London, which gives the opportunity for closely supervised research projects to be carried out and published. We have enjoyed considerable success in supporting ST4 registrars in the acquisition of NIHR In-Practice Fellowships, a further springboard for academic career development.

The Academic Department of Physiotherapy delivers BSc and MSc pre-registration programmes to produce physiotherapists who are scientifically-orientated clinicians with transferable intellectual and practical skills. The programmes confer eligibility for state registration to practice physiotherapy and full membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Our postgraduate education includes MSc in Advanced Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy, the NIHR funded Masters in Clinical Research and the supervision of PhDs.
