Study with CUSP London

I've been hugely impressed so far with the Urban Informatics MSc at CUSP London. It provides a great mix of programming skills development and urban theory, but with an emphasis on real world application to solve problems in cities. The quality of teaching is excellent and the facilities at Bush House are first class. Being in the heart of central London comes with a whole host of additional benefits: for example, we have had guest speakers from industry give us fascinating insights into some of the career paths we may have chosen. As a relatively small course based in an interdisciplinary research centre, the set-up feels much more personal and allows for a truly collaborative learning experience.

CUSP London is a centre for interdisciplinary research in urban science and fosters working across subject boundaries, which has been critical for my PhD research spanning mental health, biostatistics and geocomputation. CUSP London members are incredibly friendly and welcoming and have connected me to experts across King’s and beyond in environmental sciences, informatics and statistics. The CUSP Data Dive in March 2018 was a brilliant way to meet like-minded researchers from CUSP New York and Warwick and helped to inspire new techniques in my PhD research.

This course expertly weaved often disparate strains of knowledge together to challenge how data is approached, used and shared with others, whilst highlighting the role of the story and the forms it can take. At the Council, this has helped us reframe some of our approaches to telling stories with data and thinking about the needs of our audiences, be it our services, policy experts, decision makers or the public. Dr. Alfie Abdul Rahman’s engaging instruction has strengthened my critical eye, as well as my appetite to tackle data problems creatively. The guest seminars additionally offered a great opportunity to meet and learn from data visualisation practitioners working across fields.

As a recent King’s College London graduate, the CUSP London collaboration has benefitted me both professionally and personally. Not only did I get a Business Intelligence position with Westminster City Council after a guest lecture run by the team as part of my Geocomputation and Spatial Analysis pathway, I have also improved my data visualisation skills thanks to Telling Stories with Data module, part of the King's MSc Urban Informatics. The module was very insightful, practical and has improved the skills I use on a daily basis at the Council.
