Diversity & Inclusion
The Department of Mathematics is actively working to achieve gender equality, as part of the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences’ Women in Science Initiative. Our goal is to create a fair and inclusive environment for all staff and students, so that everyone has available to them the support and opportunities they need to achieve their full potential.
Work towards this goal is supported by the Diversity & Inclusion Departmental Committee.

The Athena SWAN charter was launched in 2005 to recognise the commitment of institutions that promote and advance the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) in academia.
The Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences held an Athena SWAN Bronze award until 2017/18. Since then departments in the Faculty have been working towards achieving their own Athena SWAN award, with the Department of Mathematics preparing a submission for 2019.
Women in Maths 2018
In March 2018 an event was held to in the week of the Women in Science Day, with Professor Marta Mazzocco giving the talk "A journey through integrability in search of the unexpected".
Professor Mazzocco (University of Birmingham) spoke about her academic career, both from a scientific point of view by illustrating some of her mathematical results, as well as from a personal point of view by explaining how she came to do a PhD and then develop into an academic.
The event also offered a chance to explore an exhibition of posters. The posters offered a glimpse into the world of mathematics through photographs by Noel Tovia Matoff and excerpts of interviews conducted by mathematicians Sylvie Paycha and Sara Azzali with women mathematicians throughout Europe.

Diversity & Inclusion Departmental Committee
The D&I Committee aims to support the Department of Mathematics in achieving the following equality and diversity aspirations.
- No staff or student in the Department should be disadvantaged because of their gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability or any other protected characteristics (Equality and Diversity Act 2010).
- The Department should provide an inclusive learning, working and research environment for all of its staff and students.
- The diversity of Mathematics staff and students should reflect the diversity of our society.
This committee oversees our activity in ensuring an inclusive and supportive working and learning environment. The remit of our Committee is:
- To act as a forum for the engagement of staff and students in issues related to diversity and inclusion, and to disseminate relevant information when required.
- To identify and prioritise areas where improvement is needed, through monitoring of relevant quantitative and qualitative data.
- To identify and promote areas of good practice.
- To review, advise on and facilitate changes to policies, procedures and working practices, with the aim of upholding the Department’s overarching equality and diversity aspirations.
- To monitor and evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of policies, procedures and working practices set by the Department, the Faculty and the University, particularly with regard to the Department’s overarching equality and diversity aspirations.
- To advise on publicity, events, marketing and recruitment material within the Department.
- To engage with other departments and institutions to share good practice.
- To drive the implementation of external diversity initiatives such as Athena SWAN.

LMS Good Practice Scheme
The Department of Mathematics strongly supports equal opportunities for all and the advancing of women’s careers within mathematics, and has signed up to the London Mathematical Society’s good practice scheme.
The Scheme sets out five principles of good practice:
- A robust organisational framework to deliver equality of opportunity and reward.
- Appointment, promotion and selection processes and procedures that encourage men and women to apply for academic posts at all levels.
- Departmental structures and systems that enable men and women to progress and continue in their careers.
- Departmental organisation, structure, management arrangements and culture that are open, inclusive and transparent and encourage the participation of all staff.
- Flexible approaches and provisions that encompass the working day, the working year and a working life and enable individuals, at all career and life stages, to maximise their contribution to mathematics, their department and institution.
