King’s College London has one of the UK’s best Physics Departments. According to the QS World University Rankings we are within the top ten universities in the country.

Our research includes biological physics and soft matter; photonics and nanotechnology; the theory and simulation of condensed matter; theoretical particle physics and cosmology; and experimental particle and astroparticle physics.

The department forms the core of wider integrated physics-related research activities across the university, with ties to other departments in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences and to physics research embedded in interdisciplinary research divisions such as the Randall Centre in the health faculties.

Research internships

The Department of Physics is a popular choice for students from other universities who wish to undertake an internship at King’s College London. Often such internships last for up to three months and such visitors will work with academic staff on areas of genuine cutting-edge research. We regret that there is no financial assistance available for internships but we welcome enquires from candidates who have secured their own funding for an internship.

Current opportunities for internships in the Department of Physics are advertised here as they become available. Please read the advert carefully and apply with copy of your CV and a full academic transcript as well as the names of your academic referees.

If you are a current King's College London Physics student the Department also runs an internship programme providing funded positions. The application and selection process is different, and details can be found in the student internship section of the handbook.

Visiting researchers

The Department of Physics is host to a number of non award visiting researchers.

If you are a postgraduate research student currently registered for a doctoral degree at another institution and interested in becoming a visiting research student in the Department, you must have an agreed supervisor from among the academic staff. After acceptance from a supervisor students should apply using King’s Apply application system. Please search for the Physics Non-award Research programme.
