Careers

The Department of Political Economy believes in supporting the professional development of our students.

Studying a degree with the Department equips students with certain skills required in the public and private sectors, and for work in civil organisations. Our students will have the opportunity to gain strong theoretical and empirical skills for the analysis of complex economic and political phenomena. These skills are highly valued in fields such as finance, consultancy, law and the civil service.

The Department supports students’ transitioning from university to professional life by focussing on key skill sets. We give students the opportunity to learn about how to write a CV or cover letter, how to target employers and prepare for job interviews.

Careers workshops

All students in our Department are able to take part in free career workshops focused on the particularities of different jobs. For example, we have previously held workshops explaining how to enter the civil service, become a political risk analyst, and pathways into academia.

These workshops are delivered by high ranked professionals, which will give you invaluable insight and knowledge.

Previous speakers include the Manager Director of Ipsos MORI, Director General of Internal Market and Services from the European Commission, Senior Economics Commentator of The Observer newspaper, and Non-Executive Director of Cornerstone Capital, among many others.

Overall, we hope the opportunities will give students the skills and knowledge required to be better prepared when applying for jobs.
