Rebuilding the iconic Strand Quadrangle

30 November 2021

The Quad, framed by the King’s building and Somerset House, has always been at the heart of King’s and student life. But now it’s time to give it a new lease of life, creating a major new social thoroughfare on campus and welcoming the Department of Engineering back into its historical home — newly transformed into a state-of-the-art innovation hub.

As part of King’s Vision 2029, and with your support, we are re-establishing this important space as the historic centre of King’s and a creative learning environment fit for the next generations of students.

Our plans

This reimagined space will be a central part of university life for our growing community. Students will benefit from the very best facilities where they can foster their talent and develop the tools to become the changemakers of tomorrow.

The cost of this redevelopment project is substantial. However, with your support, we will:

  • Resurface the Quad – we will re-establish it as the heart of the Strand campus and install a glass oculus to the levels below.
  • Rebuild the historic steps – we will make the steps up to the King’s building shine in their original glory.
  • Transform 3,000m² on two levels – below the Quad, we’ll create space for learning and teaching facilities, including a MakerSpace for all students.
  • Develop innovative lab facilities – this space will be a home for the newly relaunched Department of Engineering.

Help us to reshape the Quad and donate now.
