The King’s British Heart Foundation (BHF) Centre is a hub for inter-disciplinary cardiovascular research, innovation, and training. Established in 2008 and now in its fourth round of BHF funding, our Centre brings together a vibrant community of biomedical scientists, clinicians, physical scientists, engineers, and data experts, united in a shared mission: to transform the lives of people living with heart failure.
Heart failure affects over half a million people in the UK and remains one of the most pressing challenges in cardiovascular medicine. At King’s, we’re tackling this head-on through our current Centre’s four ambitious research themes:
- Discovering new therapies for human heart failure.
- Using advanced imaging and experimental medicine to understand disease mechanisms and predict treatment success.
- Unravelling the impact of ageing on heart failure, especially in conditions such as HFpEF.
- Pioneering precision cardiovascular medicine to personalise care, regardless of age, sex, or ethnicity.
Our Centre is hosted by the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences but spans across the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and beyond, and is embedded within King’s Health Partners thereby linking us to four of the UK’s largest specialist cardiovascular hospitals. This unique integration of research and clinical care allows us to translate discoveries from bench to bedside faster and more effectively.
We also play a vital role in training the next generation of clinical and non-clinical researchers. Our collaborative environment and cutting-edge facilities make King’s a beacon for talent and innovation in cardiovascular research.
Together, we are driving forward discoveries that will lead to better treatments, better outcomes, and better lives for people with heart failure.
