BHF Centre: Research Culture

At the King’s British Heart Foundation (BHF) Centre of Research Excellence, we are proud to cultivate a research culture that is collaborative, inclusive, and impact-driven. Our mission is to transform cardiovascular health through discovery science and translational innovation, and this is reflected in the way we work together across disciplines and support the development of the next generation of leaders in cardiovascular science.

We bring together internationally recognised basic scientists, clinicians, technicians, and professional services staff to address the most urgent challenges in cardiovascular medicine. Our culture encourages open dialogue, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a shared commitment to scientific excellence. By fostering strong links between research and clinical application, we accelerate the translation of discoveries into real-world solutions for patients.

Our activities

Through our focus on PhD students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs), we are committed to supporting and developing researchers in our field. We offer a vibrant training environment, with ECRs able to benefit from mentorship, a range of staff and student development programmes, and access to cutting-edge facilities and technologies.

The Centre’s staff and students have access to the wider faculty and university research culture programmes, such as the Wellcome Trust-funded INKLUDE programme, which aims to tackle the systemic barriers experienced by underrepresented groups across King’s. Within the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, we are also developing new interactive tools to empower research staff to navigate and plan their own career journey, with an additional focus on research line managers to support these career conversations.

Our research culture is not only about what we do, but how we do it—working together to make meaningful advances in cardiovascular science and improve outcomes for people living with heart disease.
