Hi, everyone! I'm Christie an MA student studying Cultural and Creative Industries. Can you believe winter break is already just around the corner? Whether your first term was everything you dreamt of or challenge after challenge, I want to say: Congratulations, you made it through! Now it's time to recharge over the winter.
Despite being cosy season, winters can get a bit lonely, especially with shorter days and exam season ahead. Here are my personal self-care tips as an international student, from staying connected with loved ones to healthy routines, self-reflection, and utilising King’s resources to the fullest. Let's try to keep both our body and mind happy together!
Stay connected: Home is where your heart is
It’s easy to feel distant, especially if you’re far from home. No matter how busy my days are, I try to do the following at least once a week:
- Short video calls with family and friends
The calls I enjoy the most are when we each grab something to eat, so it feels like we’re sharing a meal together.
- A simple hangout with friends (even one hour is enough!)
Anything can be a fun adventure, from getting groceries to trying out random coffee shops together.
- Reconnecting with home culture: enjoying your comfort food, movies, or music
I love making myself some kimchi-fried rice and re-watching my favourite Korean TV series, such as Mr. Sunshine and Our Beloved Summer.
Remind yourself that you are surrounded by people who care about you, no matter the time zone or physical distance.
One step at a time: Noticing tiny accomplishments
Studies and assignments can feel overwhelming, and you may feel like you’re not doing enough. I like to keep a tiny to-do list with simple tasks, which can create a sense of rhythm and accomplishment.
Small but meaningful tasks can include:
- Getting good quality sleep
- Cooking a healthy meal for yourself
- Drinking enough water throughout the day
- Stepping outside at least once
As we get closer to the end of the year, I tend to become more reflective, and that sometimes brings a bit of anxiety with it. I’m a huge overthinker, which leads to sleepless nights and snowballing worries. This is why getting a good night’s sleep is a priority on my list, and I try different methods to calm myself down:
- Thinking of three things I was grateful for or proud of that day
It’s a gentle way to acknowledge my self-worth and give myself credit for the day.
- Looking back at photos
I find it fulfilling to scroll through old photos from the same date in past years and realise how much I’ve changed and grown.
- Habitualising the 4-7-8 breathing method
This helps calm my breathing and empty my thoughts before bed.
Perks of being a King’s student: Access resources from home
Some in-person activities and services are closed over the holidays, but that doesn’t mean you're alone. King's still offers plenty of resources that you can easily access from home whenever you need some help:
• The Spectrum.Life App: offers wellbeing support like guided meditation and fitness videos, nutritious recipes and podcasts. You can easily sign up with your King's email address and explore its programmes for free.

Winter can feel long and cold at times, but none of us are navigating it alone. Be kind to yourself. Enjoy the little things. Rest when you need to. And don't be afraid to ask for help.
Stay warm, and happy holidays!
