Pre-sessional FAQs

Do I have to re-take an IELTS test at the end of the course if I achieve the required score in the Pre-sessional?

No. Successful completion of the course means you have met the language requirements for King’s and do not need to re-take IELTS or any other external English language test.

Will I continue onto my King's degree after completing the Pre-sessional course?

If you hold an offer that is conditional on meeting your English language level, you need to pass the Pre-sessional course at the level required by your department. This level will be stated in your degree offer letter. If you successfully pass the course, you will be able to progress directly onto your King’s degree.

If you are on an integrated CAS you must fully engage with your course to be able to progress to your King’s degree. This means you must attend all Pre-sessional classes, participate fully in all class activities and homework, and successfully complete and submit all assessments. Failure to fully engage may mean you will not be permitted to progress to further study at King’s College London.

How can I prepare for the Pre-sessional course?

There are things you can bring with you that will be useful, including a laptop and a good monolingual or subject-specific dictionary. We recommend reading English newspapers such as the Financial Times, the Guardian or the Independent, as well as listening to radio stations such as the BBC World Service.

We also recommend that you read academic journal articles related to the subject you plan to study, which you can find by searching  Google Scholar

Will other universities recognise my Pre-sessional results?

Many universities recognise results from King’s Pre-sessional courses, but we advise that you check with your university first and clarify whether you will also need to re-take IELTS.

When will I get my final results?

Results are given shortly after the end of the course. If you progress on to study at King's, your results will be passed on directly to your department.

How many teaching hours are there on the course each week?

This is a full time course.  A typical week includes approximately 17 contact hours, usually including online and face-to-face time; however, some weeks will see more contact hours than others.

You are expected to spend a similar amount of time on self-study.

Can I work part-time while studying on the Pre-sessional?

We recommend that you focus on your studies. If you wish to work part-time, you need to ensure that any job is outside of your daytime study and that your visa allows you to work.

How do I know which course to take?

The course length depends on the English language level you need to reach for your degree. Please use the Pre-sessional English calculator to help you find which course you need to take.

You can also contact us if you need any help.

Can I do a Pre-sessional course if I have an unconditional offer?

Yes of course! Our shorter pre-sessional courses (6-week and 6-week Combined) are great options for extra preparation.

In fact, many of our Pre-sessional students have unconditional offers. As well as improving your language and study skills, each Pre-sessional course helps you to settle into King’s and get used to the UK academic and social environment.

Is it possible to arrive late?

The courses are short and intensive, and you will need to be with us on the first day of induction. We do understand that the visa system can cause some delays so, if you think you will be delayed you must contact us before the first day of the course so we can inform you if it is possible for you to catch up.

Will I have the same tutor throughout the course?

It is common for students to have more than one tutor over the duration of the course.

Will the course include IELTS preparation classes?

No. The Pre-sessional course is an alternative to the IELTS test. If you successfully pass the course, you will not need to re-take an IELTS test to progress onto your degree at King's.

Is accommodation available during the Pre-sessional course?

As a Pre-sessional student, you are guaranteed accommodation for the duration of your Pre-sessional course. If you successfully complete your Pre-sessional course, you are also guaranteed accommodation at a King's residence for the first year of your degree.

Visit our accommodation pages to find out what accommodation is available through King's.

What is your refund policy?

Please refer to the Terms and Conditions in your offer letter.

How can I pay my tuition fees?

Payment should be made online via the King's Apply Portal using your username and password.

How do I know if I have my place on the course?

Your place on a Pre-sessional course is only secure once you have paid your tuition fees before the course starts. Please be aware that courses fill up quickly, and you should aim to secure your place as soon as you can.

If you are unsure of the procedure, please contact our admissions team.
