Biography

Dr Gabriel Reedy joined King's College London in April 2009. He serves as the Director of Academic Programmes at King’s Learning Institute and Programme Director of the Master of Arts in Clinical Education (MACE). Prior to his appointment at King’s, he was a Curriculum Innovation Fellow at The Open University, where his work engaged with issues of teaching and learning in higher education using new technologies and innovative pedagogies. In 2006 he was a visiting scholar with the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge, where he conducted the fieldwork and analysis associated with his doctoral research. His postgraduate work at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, focused on cognition and the learning sciences, and had a special emphasis on technology-enhanced learning environments and learning in practice.

 

Prior to his postgraduate work, Dr Reedy was a consultant and manager in the software industry, focusing on user training, e-learning, and user experience issues. His experience includes work at Microsoft, Intel, and several smaller software and telecom companies, as well as consulting experience in healthcare and education.

 

He has served as an associate lecturer at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, and at the Faculty of Education, The Open University. He has given invited talks at University of Cambridge; The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons; University of Notthingham; Glasgow Caledonian University; University of Melbourne; and Monash University. He was appointed a visiting academic at the Department of Health Professions Education and Educational Research at Monash University in 2015.

 

Dr Reedy also serves as the Educational Research Lead for the Simulation and Interactive Learning (SaIL) Centre for King’s Health Partners, which uses high-fidelity simulation technology as an integral part of medical, nursing, and healthcare education. In this role, he serves to advise, review, and evaluate educational programmes as well as to lead research and enquiry into learning through simulation.

 

Dr Reedy has been awarded both an Early Career Fellowship award by the International Society for the Learning Sciences (funded by the US National Science Foundation) and an Open Resources in Education (SCORE) Fellowship award (funded by HEFCE), as well as research funding from the National Institutes for Health Research (NIHR), Health Education South London, and the Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Charitable Trust. He is a Chartered Psychologist of the British Psychological Society, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research Interest and PhD Supervision

Dr Reedy's research interests focus on issues of teaching, learning, and knowing in various contexts, professions, settings and using various technologies. The sorts of questions he pursues are typically broad and exploratory, and thus are suited to qualitative methods of inquiry. In particular, his current funded research projects focus on the use of simulation in health professions education; the ways in which health professionals learn to practice in clinical settings; the ways in which early responders learn, both individually and in the context of teams, to deal with large-scale emergency events; and preparing health professionals to become educators in their professions. 

Previous work has focused in practice-based learning in diverse professional settings , including work with managers, lawyers, accountants, and primary and secondary school teachers. He has also worked significantly with higher education, exploring how students and staff are engaging with and using new technologies on a day-to-day basis.

  • Andrew Paquette: Spatial visualization, threshold concepts, and genuine problem-solving among computer graphics visual arts students
  • Libby Thomas (jointly supervised with the School of Medicine): Undergraduate medical students' engagement with interprofessional clinical simulation.
