Biography

Jan Palmowski graduated in History and Economics at the University of York in 1991, and completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford in 1995. He was awarded a Senior Scholarship at Lincoln College in 1993, and in 1995 he was elected to a Junior Research Fellowship at Christ Church, Oxford. He was Head of School of Arts & Humanities at King's College London 2008-2012.

Research

At King's College London since 1999, Jan Palmowski was the sole awardholder for an AHRC-funded research project on Constituting the German Nation: The Construction of National Identity through Constitutional Theory and Practice, 1898-1998 (2001-2004).

The project was concluded by a major international conference, and a book arising from this was published by Stanford University Press (Citizenship and National Identity in Twentieth Century Germany, ed. with Geoff Eley - see Dr Palmowski's research profile page).

Professor Palmowski has completed a monograph on the invention of national identity in the GDR, a book that looks at how the state constructed a national identity, and at the impact this had on everyday life. He is also investigating the construction of identity in the European Union and its member states.
