Research
Professor Peter James Marshall's research has covered the breadth of British imperial history, although he has a particular interest in British India. Over the course of his career he has written and edited over fourteen books, and approximately fifty articles and chapters. His most recent book, The Making and Unmaking of Empires: Britain, India, and America c.1750-1783, brings into a unified narrative the loss of one Empire in America, and the conquest of another in India. Professor Marshall was the editor of The Oxford History of the British Empire, Vol. II: The Eighteenth Century (Oxford University Press, 1998).
Biography
Professor Peter James Marshall's teaching career at King's College spans five decades. He first came to the college as an assistant lecturer in 1959, was appointed as Rhodes Professor in 1981 and retired in 1993, after which he was appointed Emeritus Professor and continued to teach at the college. Many of Peter Marshall's papers can now be found in the college archives.
