Impact

Members of the Department of History are engaged in impact and outreach as part of various projects that reach from many different regions of the UK to the USA, China, West Africa, and beyond.

Grounded in a passion for history and a commitment to the relevance of the past in shaping the present, these activities reflect the unique strengths of the department. King's historians have worked with relevant stakeholders to bring about change in military and science policy making, cultural heritage programming, and secondary school curriculum development. We also help communities across the world to engage with their own histories.

Impact case-studies based on our work have were highly rated in the most recent Research Education Framework (ranked 7th in the UK for research impact, 2021), but the scope of our public engagement stretches much further than rankings and league tables. Our research has extensive appeal beyond academia, and our staff are recognised as authorities in their fields.

We have built close relationships with many of the leading cultural institutions which make London such a rewarding city to work in, and we also collaborate with governmental offices and departments, as well as with private partners in diverse sectors, including major national and international media organisations. King's historians appear regularly on BBC radio programmes, and are cited by influential newspapers like the Financial Times and the New York Times. We collaborated with The Guardian to offer a popular and informative weekend history degree.
