Preparing for University: Self-Guided Learning Materials for Sixth-Form Students

Pre-university learners in Year 12 and 13 can now prepare themselves to study in the Department of History at King’s. Materials include worksheets and presentations which provide a taster of what university-level study in History is like or indeed can be used by anybody seeking a stimulating introduction to the department.

London Outreach Project

Engagement with London infuses all the activities of the department, and in multiple and varied ways. These include through our teaching, research, public engagement and schools outreach activities, as well as our service initiatives.

As a starting point, it is possible to study the history of the city and its enduring (but profoundly transformed) connections with the Continent and its (former) Empire from 400CE to the present-day. The department collaborates with a number of London-based archives and cultural institutions in delivering this teaching, including the London Metropolitan Archive, the Wellcome Trust and – in a unique and innovative partnership for co-delivery – the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton.

In our initiatives to widen participation in higher education, we work with many London Secondary Schools and Academies and especially those in our ‘home’ boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth.

History Teachers Network

The History department launched the King’s History Teachers' Network in 2017. The network seeks to increase our interaction with schools and to develop joint thinking on the curriculum in both institutions. It is a platform for a range of events and activities, including supporting and developing school curricula, help with history-related careers advice, CPD opportunities, subject masterclasses, and public lectures by academics in the department. The network holds a one-day annual conference every summer. Our conference aims to be a forum for discussion, sharing of best practice, and includes a keynote talk by an academic aligned with the year’s theme. Previous conference themes have included: ‘Historical Literacy: A Conference on the Move from School to University’ (2023); ‘Decolonising History Education’ (2024); and ‘Teaching History in the Age of AI’ (2025).

Cultural Outreach

In taking our teaching and research beyond the classroom, staff engage with diverse public audiences, cultural and heritage institutions and policy-making bodies in ways that have impact and illustrate the importance of history to civic engagement and global (and local) citizenship. Recent examples include offering research and historical expertise to the Migration Museum and the East End Women’s Museum, the Fabian Society and the Young Vic Theatre, the British Library, Science Museum and various Parliamentary Select Committees.

Our graduate students are given the option to engage in public history through a ‘historian in residence’ programme and many of these partner organisations, including key political institutions, think tanks and third-sector organisations, are based in London.
