Physics is the most fundamental of sciences and has had, and continues to have, profound effects on other sciences and engineering, besides having a substantial influence on philosophy, technology, economic life, warfare and medical practice.
The Department has an international reputation with staff and students from all over the world, creating a diverse and lively atmosphere in a historical environment which has spawned four Nobel Prize winners and has played a major role in the discovery of the structure of DNA.
The Department is coordinating the Cosmic Ray Project to place cosmic ray detectors in local schools and is a Supporter of the Institute of Physics Juno Project.

RAE 2008 recognises the strength of Physics research at King’s
The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirms King's position in the 'golden triangle' of the UK research intensive universities in London and Oxbridge. 95% of research from the Department of Physics has been classified as being of international quality, and more than half as internationally leading or competitive, in the most recent UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Unlike many UK institutions, King’s Physics submitted for assessment in the RAE the research of 100% of its academic staff. As such, our RAE result serves as a true reflection of the internationally excellent research being performed in the Department of Physics at King’s College London.
