Why give to King's?
King's has been making the world a better place for almost 200 years, influencing many of the advances that have shaped modern life. We are proud of our students, staff and alumni who continue to make a real difference.
As we look ahead to our bicentenary in 2029, we are ambitious to do more.
By donating to King’s, you will unlock opportunities for some of our brightest of students and support those who might not otherwise have access to a King's education. You can help us to equip the leaders and change-makers of the future with the skills they need to solve our biggest global challenges. Join us in our ambition to transform children and young people's mental health and make lifesaving breakthroughs in blood diseases, cardiology and cancer.
By donating, you can help us create a world in which being a woman is not a barrier to becoming a leader in any field and where medical technology can change the clinical outcomes for thousands around the globe.
Help make scientific breakthroughs that have real impact in the world

World-leading and outward-looking research is what we do, what we care about and how we educate at King’s. It’s how we deliver real academic, economic and societal impact and achieve our ultimate aim – to make the world a better place.
Together, King’s and its supporters can achieve incredible things.
In the last few years alone, our researchers have produced more scientific papers on autism than any other institution in the world and pioneered a more accurate way to test for autism. This means that in the future, more people with the condition will be able to get access to the care they need. We have pioneered robotic surgery, improving the outcomes for prostate cancer patients. We have designed a simple device for diagnosing pregnancy complications which could save 70,000 mothers every year and opened the world’s first purpose-built centre for palliative and end-of-life care. Our pioneering research into frugal innovation aims to revolutionise the cost and delivery of patient healthcare with novel, low-cost solutions to everyday problems. Together we are transforming healthcare services around the world, reducing financial pressure and the time it takes to bring these innovations to benefit patients.
Our research successes aren’t just confined to the world of science. King’s is also helping governments to prepare for terrorist attacks through simulations and using financial modelling to better understand the financial crisis. Through the work of our Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, we will also ensure that being a woman is not a barrier to becoming a leader in any field.
With your help, our research at King’s will make the world a better place.
Please donate today, so our researchers can embark on more life-changing projects.

Tax Efficient Giving
Information on Gift Aid and other tax efficient ways to give.
Gift Aid:
Thank you for considering making a gift to the College. By also signing up to the gift aid scheme you will be increasing the value of your gift by 25%.
All you need to do to be eligible for this scheme is:
- Pay enough UK income tax and/or capital gains tax to cover the amount of tax to be reclaimed on all your charitable donations in the appropriate tax year.
- Complete a Gift Aid declaration form. If you pay the higher rate of income tax then you can claim back the difference between the higher rate of tax (40%) and the basic rate of tax (20%) on the gross value of your donation.
If you earn over £150,000 per year, you can claim the difference between the additional rate of tax (50% until 05 April 2013, 45% thereafter) and the basic rate of tax (20%) on the gross value of your donation.
The HMRC offer a scheme for donors who complete a Self Assessment tax return which enables higher rate tax payers to donate the higher rate tax relief to King’s College London.
For more information visit Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs website.
If you are eligible for the Gift Aid scheme King’s can claim an extra 25% on donations you have made in the last four years and on future donations once we receive your declaration.
Please note that we do we do not have a charity registration number because King’s is an exempt charity under Schedule 2 of the Charities Act 1993. For more information please go to the HMRC Website.
Donating Shares:
It is now possible for alumni to receive income tax relief for gifts of quoted shares and certain other investments, whether resident or not in the UK. This is on top of Capital Gains Tax relief.
The amount a donor can deduct is the market value of the shares or securities at the date of disposal plus any incidental cost of disposing of the shares. Donors can also claim tax relief at the top rate of tax on their Self Assessment or Corporation Tax return. The Inland Revenue leaflet IR 178 explains how to work out the market value of your shares, and how to claim your tax relief.
For more information please email giving@kcl.ac.uk.
In Service to Society
King’s was founded in 1829 on the idea of serving society. To this day, we continue to ensure that serving our community is at the heart of everything we do.
There are many ways in which King’s works to make the world a better place; by promoting and taking part in volunteering, through the impact of our research, by helping to shape social reform and by providing an outstanding educational experience for our students. This year, we were ranked ninth in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings for our contribution to society.
Service is in our DNA at King’s, and there are many ways we try to embody this ethos. Our Global Day of Service brings together staff, students and alumni across the globe to volunteer in their communities. Our staff are given special ‘Service Time’ to volunteer, and we encourage our alumni to give back by mentoring, speaking at events, organising reunions, sharing connections or telling their stories. It all makes a difference.
Here are some examples of how we have embraced the concept of ‘Service’, as well as some ideas to inspire you to get involved:
Service Time for staff
Jonathan Grant, Vice-President & Vice-Principal (Service) volunteered at King’s new Community Garden on the Guy’s Campus, digging, composting and sowing seeds. Members of our Alumni & Supporter Engagement team helped with the Ragged School Museum’s summer holiday activity programme.
Global Day of Service: 25 March 2020
Our flagship day of Service, where staff, students, alumni and friends across the globe take part in volunteering activities in their communities. You can join one of our Service events, organise your own or do your little bit individually. Whether cleaning up litter, helping at food banks or sharing healthcare knowledge, it all helps. King’s was the first university in the UK to run dedicated Service events, and we want you to help us make this year’s Global Day of Service even bigger and better.
Volunteering:
Volunteering is a great way to give back, help others, learn new skills and make connections. Join our community of alumni volunteers and share your time to help a student or fellow alumni. Find out more about volunteering.

Planning on leaving a gift? Let us know
Letting us know your thoughts around your will is invaluable because it allows our staff to clearly understand your wishes and ensure that they can be met.
How your gift will help
Your gift could help provide hardship grants, bursaries or scholarships to attract the best and brightest students to King’s, whatever their background. You can choose to support a particular department, school or research area close to your heart. Research at King’s spans many fields, from finding new and more reliable ways to treat and diagnose cancer, to supporting the needs of an ageing population.
Alternatively you can help meet the most pressing needs of the university by allowing the Principal to decide where your gift would be most effective at the time it becomes active. This allows your gift to be used where the funds can make the greatest difference at that time. Leaving a gift to support King’s means you are leaving a gift to society.
