Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Fellowship Programme
Our CMR Fellowships are designed to provide hands-on training and expert knowledge in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR), offering fellows the opportunity to gain substantial experience in this rapidly evolving field.
Programme Overview:
- Duration: Minimum of 6 months, with the option to extend based on individual progress and training goals.
- Start Dates: Fellowships commence three times a year, with intakes in January, April and October.
- Location: Training is conducted at our cutting-edge imaging facility at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. The facility is equipped with the most advanced CMR technology, including the following scanners exclusively dedicated to cardiovascular imaging: two 3 Tesla scanners, two 1.5 Tesla scanners, a hybrid PET-MR scanner, and the UK’s first 0.55 Tesla system.
- Training Structure: The fellowship follows a comprehensive curriculum aligned with the EACVI CMR Syllabus, covering the entire spectrum of CMR Indications. Fellows will engage in clinical activities customized to their experience and expertise, including independently running clinical lists (typically 4–6 cases per list), co-chairing weekly multidisciplinary meetings for complex cases, and participating in structured teaching through reporting sessions led by CMR-accredited cardiologists and radiologists.
- Research Opportunities (Optional): Fellows may also choose to contribute to the Department’s extensive research portfolio, which integrates clinically oriented projects at the forefront of technical advancement. Opportunities include translating novel CMR sequences and techniques, applying data science, engaging in computational modelling, and exploring machine learning techniques.
Eligibility Criteria:
- GMC Registration with Licence to Practise in the UK: All applicants must hold a valid GMC registration with a license to practice in the UK. This needs to be in place at least 8 weeks before the start date of the fellowship.
- Clinical Experience: We welcome applications from individuals with a background in cardiology, radiology, or other related specialties, with a strong interest in cardiovascular imaging.
- EACVI / SCMR Accreditation Commitment: Fellows must commit to applying for the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) accreditation exam during or immediately after the completion of the fellowship, as part of their professional development and CMR accreditation. Our fellowships are also designed to meet the criteria of the training guidelines of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR).
- Self-Funding: As we are unable to provide financial support for this Fellowship, candidates must provide evidence of their ability to cover their own living expenses, including the cost of accommodation, for the duration of the fellowship.
- Interview: Selection for the Fellowship is subject to a successful interview, during which candidates will be assessed based on their clinical experience, motivation for pursuing CMR, and future career goals.
Limited Availability of Fellowship Posts:
To ensure the highest quality of training and access to a sufficient number of scans required for accreditation, the number of fellowship posts is limited. This guarantees personalized mentorship and adequate exposure to clinical cases necessary for developing CMR expertise and successfully pursuing EACVI accreditation.
Application Process:
Applications must be submitted at least 6 months prior to the intended start date. This allows adequate time to complete all necessary documentation, including GMC registration and processing of honorary contracts.
Required Documents:
- Updated CV (max 3 pages; page #3 should include the most important publications [max 10], if available, otherwise limit your CV to 2 pages only)
- Letter of support from a senior consultant or department head (max 1 page)
- Proof of GMC registration with a licence to practice in the UK (or evidence that the process is ongoing, and all required documentation has been submitted to GMC)
- Valid ALS certificate (ALS certificates issued from EU/Australia/Canada/US may be accepted)
- Personal statement detailing interest in the fellowship and commitment to pursuing EACVI accreditation (max 1 page)
- Proof of financial support or self-funding ability
