Let's Talk Sugar!
"Let's Talk Sugar" is a collaboration between The Healthy Eating & Active Lifestyles for Diabetes team at King's College London, Graphic Artist Annie Nicholson, and young artists from Hackney New School. This innovative project seeks to raise awareness of type 2 diabetes in our local African and Caribbean communities since people of African & Caribbean descent are up to three times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than the general UK population.
A series of creative workshops, over three months, have been led by Annie Nicholson, Graphic Artist and Art Teacher at Hackney New School, and Amanda Moore from the Diabetes Research Group at King's College. In these workshops, the young artists have been exploring the meaning of diabetes in their community and the value they place on their own health. They have developed their own interpretations of the subject through visual art, rhyme and rap songs!
A final exhibition took place at SPACE Gallery, Mare St, Hackney, E8 3RH on 29th November 2017.
The evening was a celebration of the achievements of the young artists, together with talks about type 2 diabetes specifically focused to help our African and Caribbean communities and was a chance to learn about how to live well with the condition.
This project is a collaboration between King's College London's The Healthy Eating & Active Lifestyles for Diabetes team, Graphic Artist Annie Nicholson and children at Hackney New School. It is supported by the university's Culture team as part of the Early Career Researchers scheme.
