Field trips

Field trips are an exciting way to practically apply your studies in a real-world situation while exploring the world. They are integral to your experience in the Department of Geography at King’s because they allow you to gain exposure to the practicalities of field observation and data collection.

They also offer you a better understanding of the wide range of opportunities available as a graduate. Plus, they're a great way for everyone to get to know each other better.

The locations of the fieldtrip are subject to national and university policy, as well respect to minimise potential environmental impacts. Given these considerations, locations vary depending on the national and international context.

The hero image on this webpage was taken by student Zi Shao on a field trip to southern Spain.

BA and BSc Field Trips

On their UK residential field trip, our year one students undertake research projects that may:

• analyse the historical and cultural geographies of the area

• explore the impacts of industrial agriculture

• investigate the experiences of migrants who tend the fields

• consider the evolution of natural resources in the area, as well as the geomorphology and eco-hydrology.

Your destination in year two is guided by your degree (BSc or BA) and depends on your main area of interest.

For BA students, the trip is preceded by a term’s worth of preparatory classes in which you conceive and develop a research project to be undertaken ‘in the field’.

For BSc Students, data collected in the field as part of the trip is analysed back in London in our state-of-the-art computer labs or the John B Thornes Laboratory.

MSci Field Trips

In year one, environmental science students participate in local fieldtrips, making the most of London as a Living Lab to enrich their learning experience. A short overnight field trip further helps students to build a strong foundation in environmental science whilst getting to know their peers and educators.

In years two and three, students go on residential field trips of up to a week-long to UK destinations. The trips allow students to put what they learn in the classroom and laboratory into context and practice.

Year four brings further opportunities for field work, including within the compulsory Advanced Field & Laboratory Research for Environmental Science module and as part of student dissertation research.
