Women in Science
The Department of Mathematics is actively working to achieve gender equality, as part of the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences’ Women in Science Initiative. Our goal is to create a fair and inclusive environment for all staff and students, so that everyone has available to them the support and opportunities they need to achieve their full potential.

The Athena SWAN charter was launched in 2005 to recognise the commitment of institutions that promote and advance the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) in academia.
As part of the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences, we were awarded our Athena SWAN Bronze Award in September 2014 and are currently working towards a department-level award.
These awards recognise commitment to advancing women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine in higher education and research. To gain this award, we had to go through a rigorous self-assessment process in order to identify the particular challenges we face and construct an extensive action plan to address these challenges. Mathematics Self-Assessment Team (SAT)
The principal responsibility of the Mathematics Self Assessment Team is to guide the Department in its preparation and submission of an Athena SWAN Bronze award application, and to oversee the implementation of the action plan.
The SAT has a diverse membership consisting of male and female academics, research staff and professional services staff. The group discusses, implements, promotes and monitors department-level objectives and strategies aimed at improving the working environment for all staff and students.
