Expertise

The department’s philosophical expertise covers a broad range of contemporary practical and theoretical philosophy as well as much of the history of philosophy, from the pre-Socratics and ancient Chinese philosophy through to present day Analytic and Continental traditions. 


 

The department’s research activity is divided into the following five research clusters, each (very approximately!) associated with a range of subdisciplines as follows.   

Formal Methods: Logic, Epistemology 

History of Philosophy: Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern, and Kant, Continental 

Metaphysical Foundations of the Sciences: Metaphysics, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Physics 

Moral, Legal, and Political Philosophy: Politics, Ethics 

Rationality, Action, and Mind: Philosophy of Mind, Psychology, and Action, Language, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Religion 

Our research clusters meet weekly or fortnightly during term-time to host a visiting speaker, discuss a work in progress paper, or read recent work relevant work.
