Rethinking citizenship

Read the report

The Policy Institute produced a report looking at the challenges for migration policy in a post-Brexit era and how policymakers might respond by reforming the way the UK citizenship process works. The report argues that a new approach to citizenship could provide a pragmatic and politically deliverable solution to some of the current difficulties we face as we prepare to leave the EU.

Key recommendations include:

  • Exploring whether a special citizenship offer can be made to EU citizens to provide reassurance and stability post-Brexit.
  • Re-visiting birthright citizenship as a means to solve issues such as the problem of undocumented child migrants.
  • Reducing costs and confusion inherent in current Home Office processes and practice with regards to citizenship.
  • Using citizenship policy to foster greater political consensus.
