Pursue your passion for languages in department with a long history of teaching both Spanish (first taught at King’s in 1831) and Portuguese (pioneered here in the 1860s).

Our Modern Language departments at King’s were ranked ninth in the UK for research power in the most recent Research Excellence Framework so you’ll be undertaking your PhD with experts in their field. 

With us you can cover research topics ranging from Medieval and Renaissance Spanish and Portuguese to Modern Spanish and Latin American poetry and from Lusophone Atlantic and Islamic history to post-Enlightenment Spanish, Brazilian and Spanish American literature.  

We also offer research expertise and groups in Latin American visual arts, Hispanic drama, Brazilian music and Translation studies spanning fiction and poetry, drama and popular song 

Our PhD students can take advantage of an exciting range of collaborations with partners such as museums, galleries, theatre, cultural institutions and with overseas universities in Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

Baroness von Schlippenbach Studentship

The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies is delighted that, for the 2021/2022 academic year, it can offer the Baroness von Schlippenbach Studentship to both students on our Master’s and MPhil/PhD programmes. Due to the generosity of the Bequest, the department is able to fund to this scheme for applicants to the 2021/22 academic year.
