Widening Participation

The King’s Theology and Religious Studies department is particularly diverse both in its students and its staff. Our academic cohort is highly international in nature, originating from countries including Germany, Russia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States. Our students come from similarly diverse range of countries, from Malaysia to Australia, the US to France, and from a variety of British backgrounds that stretch from rural Wales to urban London.

Diversity and inclusion are at the core of our approach to studying religions and theologies. For example, TRS undergraduate student Onyinye Udokporo has found new opportunities in her degree and and she now advocates for young people’s social mobility, working with the Prince’s Trust and the City of London Corporation. In 2018 she was named King’s Student of the Year.

Our department has a strong commitment to making our outstanding teaching available to students regardless of their school type or income level.

In July 2018, for example, we partnered with the Education department to run a major Religious Studies A-Level Widening Participation conference that brought more than 200 students and teachers to King’s. At the core of the conference was a set of talks from TRS academics Tony Milligan, Kazuyo Murata, Lydia Schumacher, and Chris Hamilton on A-Level topics such as Islamic theology and Wittgenstein’s thinking on religion and language.

The King’s College London Theology Trust allows us to make our learning and research more widely accessible, through an annual Overseas Scholarship and a set of individual small grants. For more on these opportunities please visit our department funding page.
