Master’s

Study and research within our dynamic English Department here at King’s, one of the largest and oldest departments of English in the UK.

The King's College London Department of English has a thriving and diverse community of more than 120 postgraduate students pursuing taught MA programmes. Our courses range from the medieval to the contemporary and all provide specialist teaching, often in partnership with London’s cultural institutions, expert dissertation supervision and research training.

Subject-based degrees allow students to specialise in their chosen area, with opportunities to  drawn from the research interests of the department's academics. There is a strong emphasis on the social and political elements of reading, with theory-driven course content. Our programmes offer flexibility to allow students to study part-time alongside work or family commitments.

Study Shakespeare in the heart of London

For our Shakespeare Studies MA, delivered in partnership with Shakespeare's Globe, a bursary of £9,200 is available for the tuition fees of a home student who has accepted an offer on the course.

How does Old English shape the language we use today?

Old English was the language used in medieval times across the kingdoms that now make up England. Although it may look and sound very different to today's English, the roots of many words can be traced back to this period.

In this video, Dr Carl Kears and students Charlotte and Laju explain how studying Old English can unlock a deeper understanding of the past and help us reinterpret culture and literature for modern times.
