Join us on Thursday 23rd April for our next Analytical Bites seminar exploring how next‑generation mass spectrometry is transforming elemental imaging across the life and environmental sciences. This event will centre on the Nu Instruments Vitesse time‑of‑flight ICP‑MS, coupled with a laser ablation system, and its unique ability to image the entire periodic table simultaneously.
Unlike conventional mass spectrometry approaches that require pre‑selection of target elements, TOF‑ICP‑MS enables pseudo‑simultaneous detection of major, minor and trace elements in a single acquisition. This “see the unexpected” capability offers exceptional flexibility, making it ideally suited to exploratory and hypothesis‑driven studies alike. When combined with fast laser ablation systems, the Vitesse delivers high‑resolution spatial maps of elemental distributions across complex samples, from biological tissues and cells to environmental and advanced materials.
In this session, Dr Lukas Schlatt from Nu instruments, will introduce the principles of TOF‑ICP‑MS imaging, and Dr Alex Morrell, London Metallomics Facility Manager, will highlight real‑world application examples, and discuss how whole‑periodic‑table acquisition opens new opportunities for multi‑element discovery and cross‑disciplinary research. Whether you are new to elemental imaging or looking to expand the scope of your current workflows, this Analytical Bites event will showcase how cutting‑edge instrumentation can unlock richer, more informative spatial chemistry.
Speakers

Dr Lukas Schlatt - Product Manager for the Vitesse TOF‑ICP‑MS at Nu Instruments.
Lukas has a strong background in analytical and bioinorganic chemistry, with research experience spanning ICP‑TOF‑MS, laser ablation imaging, nanoparticle analysis and quantitative elemental bioanalysis. In his current role, Lukas works at the interface of instrument development, applications and users, supporting advanced multi‑element workflows.

Dr Alex Morrell - Facility Manager and Lead Scientist of the London Metallomics Facility, King’s College London.
Alex's research focuses on elemental and correlative bioimaging using mass spectrometry, with particular interest in imaging metals in biological tissues to address challenges in health, disease and biomaterials research.
