Widening Participation

The Department of German is committed to widening participation by opening up to under-represented groups and supporting them in accessing higher education. We work with a wide range of state schools in and around London to support language learning and promote university-level study. As well as inviting school groups to King’s on a regular basis for workshops and study days, we run a teachers’ network and frequently visit schools to give talks and taster classes.

We regularly organise summer schools for prospective students from state schools and less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds. These take place at King’s and offer participants the opportunity to experience university life and meet current students and staff. The programme of activities is designed to inspire and challenge participants through interactive workshops, hands-on research, film screenings and trips to local cultural institutions. It also includes a careers workshop with the chance to network with former students, and support with applying to university.

This was a life-changing opportunity. It was really inspiring, and I now have the confidence to apply to study languages at university.

In addition to summer schools, we also hold regular widening participation and outreach events at King’s.

These include:

  • Our popular annual taster days for year 12 students (‘German Studies’ and ‘German from scratch’) - visit the University of London taster courses website.
  • A workshop for sixth-form students based around our annual German-language play.
  • A themed competition for learners of German.
  • A-level study workshops based around a particular topic or theme from the syllabus.
  • A workshop on languages and careers for Year 8 or 9 pupils.

Many of our students also take part in the Languages Ambassadors scheme, organised by Routes into Languages, which gives them training to visit schools and promote language-learning.
