Undergraduate stories

Oliver Rowe

Oliver William Rowe 'I graduated from King's in 2017 with a BA in History. Following this, I pursued an MA in International History at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, graduating in 2019.

I am now a PhD student and Junior Research Fellow at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies at the University of Tartu.

Looking back, my experience at King's set me up incredibly well for the work and research I'm doing now. Whether this was the inspiring and genuinely world-class teaching staff of the department, the abundance of materials and adjacent academic networks in London, or the extracurricular activities one could take advantage of (such as language classes), King's provided me with a really firm but challenging basis upon which I have started to build my academic career, as well as reaffirming and developing my love and interest for the discipline. It was an absolute blast!'

'I recently graduated from King’s with a History BA and I am currently studying for an MSc in International Relations at the LSE.

My degree equipped me with many skills, particularly fostering my critical thinking and ability to process and evaluate complex source material and different perspectives.

As a global university, King’s allowed me to appreciate diversity and cross-cultural collaboration. My undergraduate degree provided me with transferable skills that have so far proved instrumental in my postgraduate studies – after completing my MSC, I am hoping to pursue a career as a policy or political risk analyst.'

George Mills 'After graduating with a History BA in 2021, Ibegan working in public relations for the UK's largest private hospital operator.

My degree taught me to think around a situation, gather information from as wide a selection of sources as possible and then come to a conclusion. These are all skills that have helped me immeasurably in my career after university.

King's equips its graduates with a belief that their ideas, knowledge and experiences have value. Not just value, but the power to make a difference in the world around them. I look back fondly on my time at King's and would encourage anybody to explore pursuing a degree at King’s.'

Sophia Georghiou

'I graduated from King’s in 2021 with a BA in History and now work as a Supervisory analyst at the Bank of England. As a Supervisor, I am responsible for the prudential regulation of banks, building societies, credit unions, insurers and major investment firms.

Although my career and degree, at first glance, may not seem to link, you come to realise that your education is so much more than just the subject you studied. King’s taught me to read complicated and long historical texts, which equipped me with the analytical skills needed for financial documents.

Group presentations and historical debates means I am comfortable in meetings and calls with CEOs and CFOs. Additionally, working closely with peers and faculty resulted in strong interpersonal skills, which readied me for office life. Although my time at King’s was impacted by the pandemic, I immensely enjoyed my studies and am grateful for all I learnt and experienced.'

Amanda Gan

'After graduating with a History BA from Kings in 2021, I am now pursuing an exciting career with the Singapore Tourism Board under its graduate scheme.

My degree taught me how to thoroughly engage with various worldviews and perspectives as well as how to read, think and write clearly and critically, which are indispensable skill sets in today’s job economy.

During my time at King’s, I enjoyed constantly learning new things, as well as having passionate lecturers who were experts in their own research fields. I can confidently utilise the skills and inquisitive mindset I have gained from my degree into my future career pursuits.'

Idris Azim

Idris Azim 'After graduating with a History BA, I entered the field of public policy strategic advisory, which focuses on providing solutions in public sector affairs to either private sector clients or governments.

Some of my career highlights include co-writing a socioeconomic strategy blueprint and assisting in the facilitation of strategy workshops for the Malaysian government. I recently joined Bower Group Asia, a Washington-based international government affairs and strategy advisory firm that serves clients in 28 countries.

I credit my history degree with fostering crucial critical thinking and analytical abilities as well as driving me to pursue opportunities outside of my scope of work. Thanks to these invaluable skills gained through my time at King’s, I have been able to meet two Malaysian Prime Ministers, been featured as a success story in Microsoft’s Global Skills Initiative, been hired as a Futurist for the Asia Development Bank (ADB) and interviewed the Chief People Officer of CIMB Bank.'

Postgraduate Stories

Hugo Bebbington – MA World History and Cultures

'I graduated from King’s in 2016, where I studied an MA in World History and Cultures.

Being able to condense various sources and then articulate their significance led me to starting a career in PR and Communications.Shortly after graduating, I started an internship at CNN and eventually led to spending five years at the company both in London and Hong Kong.

Critical thinking, project management and precise contextualisation were all skills developed during my Master’s and are used almost daily in the roles I’ve held since at Twitter and CNN. Working for international brands during my career across various markets has only reaffirmed the benefits of studying such a globally-minded degree and at an institution such as King’s.'

Charlotte Storey – MA Early Modern History

'I completed an MA in Early Modern History in 2021. I then worked as Lead Education Officer for Bromley Historic Collections.

Now, I am a Learning Coordinator for the Museum of London where I develop and run schools sessions and large scale family events. This involves working with performers, creating a variety of resources from live streams to trails and looking after incredible objects in our learning collection!

Studying at King's not only helped me develop skills in discussing history in an enjoyable and accessible way, but also gave me the skillset to confront the more difficult sides of history, especially in modules such as Public History. It gave me confidence in my own research and discussion abilities that has allowed me to help create rewarding experiences that inform people's relationship with history and heritage. '

Frances McNab – MA Contemporary British History

Frances McNab

'I really enjoyed my MA in Contemporary British History at King’s. Since graduating, I have worked in marketing and communications within the technology transfer industry, and private investment and wealth management services.

The most valuable skill I gained from my Masters was the honing of my writing skills, which have been essential across my communications roles. The quality of teaching and research also challenged me to improve my research and analytical skills, and produce better quality work.

I was able to take a module run by The Strand Group titled, ‘The Blair Years’ through which we met a number of advisers to Tony Blair, as well as Blair himself, which was invaluable to our learning, as well as making future connections.'

Danny Kane – MA Medieval Studies

'I studied for my Master’s in Medieval History from 2020/21 and despite the challenges during that period, I found a community of lecturers and fellow students there and developed skills that I have carried forward since graduating.

My lecturers were professional and approachable, vastly knowledgeable, yet always open to exploring new ideas and concepts. Their cutting-edge research and passion for their work always came through, and they were more than willing to explore any of my research ideas.I learned both practical skills and critical concepts that I have continued to use in my career in the Humanities today.

I currently work in one of the largest museums in the world, helping to secure funding for exhibitions, research positions and the study of objects and artefacts from across the planet. I cannot recommend postgraduate studies enough for like-minded students looking to excel, to challenge themselves and become part of a global King’s community.'
