Challenges and achievements

Any details you wish to share about how being female has impacted upon your career (positively or negatively)

I used to think that the greatest challenges I have faced in my career were childcare (I arrived at King’s with a young baby as well as a seven-year old, a long commute and culture shock to find that there was no childcare support at all at King’s).

I am now facing the challenges of long-term care of the elderly as well and have a greater sense of the different phases of life-experience that impact on my sense of self and career. I have been fortunate in developing networks outside of work to help sustain me during these periods of responsibility and care.

Professionally I have been equally lucky to have developed long-lasting academic networks. and I have a few very good colleagues here at King’s who are also supportive in informal but extremely enriching ways, in spite of the fact that we all have very busy lives.   There is, however, very little by way of professional career development offered to female professors at King's.
