Improving Quality: A Healthcare Revolution in Somaliland

King’s and Somaliland’s Ministry of Health Development worked together to put quality at the heart of healthcare, from national policy to frontline hospitals and clinics.

Stroke in Sierra Leone: Improving Stroke Care and Outcomes

From 2019-2023, King’s managed an NIHR-funded research project, Stroke in Sierra Leone (SISLE) to improve stroke care and outcomes for patients. One of the key activities of the project was the establishment of the Stroke Association – a group of stroke survivors who regularly meet to offer peer support and provide a space for dialogue and decision-making between service users and service providers of stroke care. As a result of the stroke research group, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation prioritised the establishment of specialised stroke units across the country, and in 2022, Connaught Hospital opened the first stroke unit. Audit data gathered one year after the stroke unit opened, demonstrates some promising results, with a reduction in stroke mortality.
