Organisation of School
The School is headed by Professor Ajay Shah. We have around 290 research workers, including 50 principal investigators (PIs) and over 70 PhD/MD students. Qualification for PI status within the School requires a track record of high quality publications, significant peer-reviewed grant income, and a commitment to the supervision and training of postgraduate students.
School activities are currently based on all 3 hospital campuses of the King's Schools--St Thomas', Denmark Hill and Guy's-- and Waterloo campus.
The School has strong collaborations and interactions with colleagues in other groupings such as the Randall Division of Cell and Molecular Biophysics (structural biology, biophysics, cellular imaging), the Imaging Sciences and Biomedical Engineering Division (clinical and non-clinical cardiovascular MRI), the Institute of Psychiatry (stem cells, imaging), and others.
All cardiovascular postgraduate training is coordinated and monitored through the School. The School hosts a national BHF 4-year Cardiovascular MRes/PhD training programme as well as a BBSRC Integrative Biomedicine 4-year PhD programme. Interdisciplinary studentships in cardiovascular research are also funded by our BHF Centre of Research Excellence. We also place significant emphasis on the training of clinician scientists, with excellent integration of research and clinical training.
Research activities are focused on two thematic areas, namely cardiac biomedicine and vascular biomedicine. There is a major focus on cellular and molecular signalling, which cuts across and integrates these two themes.
With respect to translational research and clinical application, the School is part of the Cardiovascular Clinical Academic Group, King’s Health Partners. The School has a major contribution to the recent NIHR Biomedical Research Centre award to Guy’s & St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust together with King’s College London and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The School is also closely integrated within the clinical cardiac units of our partner Trusts, which have nationally and internationally leading expertise in many areas, e.g. interventional cardiology, coronary physiology, cardiac surgery, echocardiography and imaging.
