New videos about KSLP and Connaught Hospital building a stronger health system in Sierra Leone
In a new series of videos Connaught Hospital’s passionate and knowledgeable staff tell the story of how they’re working with King’s Sierra Leone Partnership (KSLP) to build a strong and resilient health system in Sierra Leone. The four short films highlight the ongoing work in Accident & Emergency, Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention & Control, Surgery, and the Intensive Care Unit at Connaught Hospital.
These videos also give potential KSLP volunteers an idea about the wide variety of work the team does with its local partners.
The first video describes how Connaught Hospital staff and King’s Sierra Leone Partnership have worked together to develop a functioning triage system that empowers nurses and improves patient outcomes. Each day, approximately 3,800 people pass through Connaught Hospital’s main gate and more than 24,000 people access care each year. With so many people, it’s important that patients are triaged quickly and correctly.
The second video describes how Connaught Hospital staff and KSLP are working together to develop guidelines, train health workers, improve counselling services, create a Centre of Excellence for Infectious Diseases, and improve clinical audit and research. 60-70% of all Connaught Hospital admissions relate to infectious diseases including malaria, TB, typhoid, bacterial pneumonias, HIV, viral hepatitis, and other infections.
The third video focusses on how Connaught staff are working with KSLP, and across the hospital, to improve access to safe surgical care.
Connaught Hospital is the only hospital in Sierra Leone with piped oxygen. This has led to a reduction in mortality rates at the hospital. In this video, the hospital’s doctors, nurses, and technicians share how they run the onsite oxygen factory and discuss the difference it’s making in patients’ lives.
The King’s Sierra Leone Partnership (KSLP) is working alongside Connaught Hospital and other local partners to build the capacity of individuals, institutions, and systems to improve health outcomes in Sierra Leone. Connaught Hospital is Sierra Leone’s principal adult referral hospital and is a key component in the nation’s new teaching hospital complex. Supported by KSLP, which leverages expertise in clinical service delivery, health education and training, policy, and research, Connaught staff are working to establish the hospital as a national hub of quality care.
